Contemplative Practices in Four Traditions will explore spiritual practices in Judaism, Nature, Christianity, and Buddhism. Participants may register for all four or choose one or more individual sessions to attend. Each week we will delve into a different tradition through an overview of its spiritual practices. We will then experience two of the contemplative practices from that tradition, followed with time for reflection and sharing. In closing, we will look at ways we might incorporate these practices into our daily lives, enhancing our own Tradition.
Following this program, participants will have learned about, and experienced, a variety of contemplative practices that can enhance the ways we listen to God and deepen our spirituality. We will expand our understanding and appreciation of the ways different traditions listen to God and we will have explored ways of incorporating these practices from different traditions into our own contemplative practices and spirituality.
This program is designed for adults interested in different faiths and their contemplative practices, and who are looking for ways to enhance their own practices.
Session 1: October 25 We explore what Contemplation is and the role of Contemplative Practices as a way of being fully alive and present to the holy in our lives. We will then delve into ways of understanding God and one’s relationship with God through Judaism, their belief that the world is simultaneously material and spiritual, that the whole world is full of God. Judaism invites us to appreciate the role of blessings in our lives and the significance of our faith as evolving. We will experience two Jewish practices: a Blessing and Filled with Your Glory.
Session 2: November 8 In our time with Nature, we explore what John Muir wrote: “when one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” Through nature we feel a living connection with life around us. We become more aware of our thoughts and the opportunity to quiet our minds. It is often helpful to note similarities between our inner self and the outer wilderness, and to be guided by the seasons and by nature’s ability to heal. Practices: Finding the Infinite in the Finite. Taking a Sensory Break.
Session 3: November 22 As Henry Nouwen wrote: “Spiritual disciplines are nothing more and nothing less than ways to create a room where Christ can invite us to feast with him at the table of abundance.” During this session we will immerse ourselves in creating such a room, a room in which we are receptive and listen to God with the “ear of our hearts” through prayer. Practices: Writing your own Psalm or Paraphrasing a Psalm; Practicing the Presence of God.
Session 4: December 6 In our Buddhist exploration, we will delve into their understanding of the significance of our state of mind and our responsibility for these states. We will look at the Buddhist understanding of attachments, their role in our suffering, and explore meditation as a way of accepting impermanence, of being in the present moment, of awakening our compassionate hearts. Practices: Calm Abiding Meditation; Loving-Kindness Meditation.
