Since 2008, Pathways has been a spiritual retreat center for individuals and groups seeking sacred space for rest, reflection and renewal in Goshen, IN. Offering a rhythm of daily and seasonal prayers for 15 years, Pathways creates community grounded in prayer. Spiritual direction, personal retreats and a variety of group retreats provide companionship and solitude. The retreat house, expanded in 2016, is the central hub for Pathways' prayers, spiritual direction sessions, and group retreats. Pathways also includes 17 acres of forest and meadow on which two miles of trails are available for walking. A private cottage in the woods and composting outhouse provide welcoming space for personal retreats. Two prayer labyrinths and secluded alcoves located throughout the property invite guests to rest and reflect.
Who comes to Pathways Retreat?
Most guests live within a 50-mile radius and include clergy and others in service professions; adults of all ages and life stages; college and seminary students; and elementary-aged children. Healthcare and service organizations desiring a quiet, prayerful and convenient location for a meeting also come to Pathways. By providing leaders a place to rest, reflect and renew, they are better able to hold space for the people they serve, making known love and wholeness in the world.
What is the Meadowlands Capital Campaign?
In 2016 Pathways purchased 3 1/2 acres adjacent to its property and called it the Meadowlands as it is an open, expansive space. Having listened to guests to discern what this land offers to help fulfill its mission of rest, reflection and renewal, the Board of Directors is excited to raise $100,000 for the following:
Outdoor Pavilion The pandemic raised awareness of the need for an outdoor, covered space for group gatherings. The Pavilion is a response to this need. It will be an open, protected space for prayers, ministry events, and group gatherings. The structure will be designed as a sacred space featuring a glass cupola and a labyrinth on the floor. A brick walkway connected to the retreat house will provide an accessible path to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs.
Land Restoration Nurturing creation is one of Pathways’ six values. Living this value, Meadowlands will be planted for beauty and biodiversity, restored with native prairie grasses and wildflowers for a healthy ecosystem. Restoring the land involves removing invasives, and paying attention to what nature wants and cooperating with the generative forces of nature. In this open space, boulders for sky gazing will complement Pathways’ wooded areas and trails. Tree of Hope Devotional Room and Hammock Room The Tree of Hope will feature a sculpture by a local artist and on which guests can tie strips of cloth for personal prayer, similar to the traditional Celtic clootie (cloth) tree. A shaded area located underneath pine trees, will provide space for guests to rest in hammocks.
How much are you hoping to raise?
The total cost for this is $155,000 and Pathways needs to raise $100,000. As Pathways continues to grow and imagines future generations of spiritual seekers, the Board of Directors hopes to build on the success of Pathways’ first 15 years, and guide it toward the future. This campaign to Restore the Soul and Restore the Land is the next step toward this goal. Those involved in this campaign have personally committed over $30,000 toward this project and Pathways has designated another $25,000 from memorial funds and other contributions.
