TRE® is a simple technique that uses exercises to release stress or tension from the body that accumulates from everyday circumstances of life, from difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or traumatic life experiences.
TRE® is a set of seven exercises, created by David Berceli, PhD, that help to release deep tension from the body by evoking a self-controlled muscular shaking process in the body called neurogenic muscle tremors. The uniqueness of this technique is that this shaking originates deep in the core of the body of the psoas muscles. These gentle tremors reverberate outwards along the spine releasing tension from the sacrum to the cranium. This sustained vibration allows the body and the nervous system to be calmed, restoring a grounded sense within the body.
The TRE® mechanism, or shaking ability, exists in all mammals and humans. It is the body's most organic and natural way of unravelling contracted or tight stress patterns, as well as reducing the charge of stress hormones and un-healthy chemical build up, bringing the body back to balance. TRE® is a body based (somatic) process which can allow an individual to discharge tension from the body, without needing to verbally process or talk about the original stress. Reported benefits of TRE® include decreased anxiety, increased relaxation, better sleep, improved relationships, greater emotional resiliency, reduced symptoms of PTSD, expanded awareness of body, mind, spirit.
Many consider TRE® a spiritual or contemplative practice. TRE® facilitates release of tension at a deep level. Increased awareness of a ‘deeper sense of self’ often extends itself into the realm of the ‘spiritual’. Once there is a deeper felt sense of oneself, there is a natural deeper sense of connection to others and the ‘universe’ or the ‘spiritual’.
TRE® is a safe and effective practice for use at home. We recommend when first starting TRE® to work with a TRE® Certified Provider for three one-hour sessions. This offers space to safely learn the exercises and develop the ability to self-regulate.
